Offering a fresh take on the world of sports

  • The Calgary Flames haven’t had the same success recently as in the 1980’s with the likes of Lanny MacDonald, Mike Vernon, and Joe Nieuwendyk. It looked as though the team wouldn’t reach the Stanley Cup finals again after the win in 1989, that was until the future all time leader in games played, goals, and points (and now a member of the Hall of Fame) was traded from the Dallas Stars to Calgary in the form of Jarome Igina, and in 2003-04 a trade with the San Jose Sharks brought the Flames their franchise goaltender, Miikka Kiprusoff. The ’04 finals run lit the city and reenergized a fan base that was losing interest in it’s team. Since then the Flames have burnt out after the retirement of the all time wins leader (305), and the carousel of starting goalies in the organization has been non stop. Since Kiprusoff’s retirement the Flames have failed to get their next goalie, included among them are names like Jonas Hiller and Niklas Backstrom, (granted it was only for a year). For the Flames to win their next Stanley Cup they need a goaltender, and that’s been the problem with the Flames, they haven’t found one. The future of the position seems to rest in Tyler Parsons, Jon Gilles, Dustin Wolf, and Artyom Zagidulin, all four of whom could be the Flames next all-star goalie. They have the time with the core group all signed to long term contracts including Sean Monahan, Johnny Gaudreau, and Matthew Tkachuck, but the Flames are in a win now mentality and will need current goalies Cam Talbot and David Rittich to be at their best if their going to win the Cup any time soon.

  • The window for free agent negotiations is in full swing and the Calgary Stampeders surprisingly have been busy. In most seasons the Stampeders have elected to wait until the draft to make moves or signings, this season has been different. With the losses of star defensive lineman Jaylon Hutchings and linebacker Jacob Roberts to NFL futures contracts, it became more evident that another lineman who was set for free agency this offseason, Clarence Hicks was the priority.

    New Stampeders Players List

Of the newest members of the Stampeders, one of the key name’s on the board are Brandon Maina out of Wofford College of the FCS division of the NCAA. The level directly below the highest level of football in the NCAA system. He is NFL draft eligible in 2026, however he has elected to skip that process to join the Stampeders. He was an FCS second team All-American in 2025 and rather than exploring the transfer portal for an FBS school decided to turn pro.

Another name to watch is R.J. Moten out of the University of Florida. Moten has been on the Stampeders negotiation list for a couple of seasons and was clearly a target for head coach and general manager Dave Dickenson.

    Stampeders Re-Signing List

The follow is a list of all Stampeders re-signing.

    • Clark Barnes – National – WR
    • Bryce Bell – National – OL
    • Erik Brooks – American – WR
    • Bailey Devine-Scott – Global – DB/LB
    • Clarence Hicks – American – DL
    • Tomas Jack-Kurdyla – National – OL
    • Tevin Jones – American – WR
    • Daniel Joseph – National – DL
    • Marquel Lee – American – LB
    • Dedrick Mills – American – RB
    • Derrick Moncrief – American – DB
    • Godfrey Onyeka – National – DB
    • Micah Teitz – National – LB
    • Charles Wiley – American – DL
    • Kyle Wilson – American – LB
  • The East and West will clash once again, the 112th Grey Cup Game is officially upon us, and the party is just getting started. Grey Cup Week is one of the most Canadian “things-to-do” every single year. It’s a week long celebration of what makes us all Canadian, a single unifying event that’s only equaled in the sporting world during the Olympics. A time for Canadian Football to take the spotlight, and for fans from coast-to-coast-to-coast to come together for the love of the game.

This year the two teams competing for the second oldest trophy in North America are the two best teams in the CFL today in the 12-6 Saskatchewan Roughriders, (last won the Grey Cup in 2013,) and the 10-6 Montreal Alouettes (last won the Grey Cup in 2023).

    Montreal Alouettes

The Alouettes have the CFL record holder for best start to a career by a quarterback in Davis Alexander, who still has yet to lose a single game that he has started in, including in the playoffs. They also have a couple of the best receivers in the league in Austin Mack and 2023 Grey Cup Most Valuable Canadian Tyson Philpot. Their path to the Grey Cup included wins against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers (42-33) and the Hamilton Tiger-Cats (19-16) and are looking to win their 9th Grey Cup in franchise history and second in three years.

    Saskatchewan Roughriders

The Roughriders have one of the most accurate passers in league history with Trevor Harris, and one of the most bruising power backs in the game in A.J. Ouellette in the back-field. Add on a second coming of the “Canadian Air Force”, a term given to the Canadian content at receiver in the late 2000’s that’s becoming relevant once again with Kian Schaffer-Baker, and Samuel Emilus leading the charge. Their path involved a bye to the West Final by virtue of having the best record in the West, and a win over the B.C. Lions (24-21) and are geared up to win their 5th Grey Cup title in their 115 year existence.

My Prediction for the 112th Grey Cup

The merits for both teams winning the 112th Grey Cup are undeniable. My prediction for last weeks East Final ended up being completely off in every sense of the word. This game could come down to who doesn’t turn the ball over, or a last second field goal to win it all, something that could cause some concern with Brett Lauther’s issues this season in Saskatchewan.

    Montreal – 28
    Saskatchewan – 29

No matter who wins, this has been an incredible season from the start, 41 games in the regular season and every game in the playoffs has been decided in the last three minutes of the game, with 34 of those by a one possession margin (0-8 points) and 48 come from behind victories.

Another incredible season is coming to a close, and I for one am already excited for next season. Even with the rule changes set to start rolling out.

  • With the disappointing 33-30 loss to the BC Lions on Nov. 1 in the West Semi-Final, the focus now shifts for Stampeders GM and Head Coach Dave Dickinson into offseason mode. Namely who to re-sign from the 2025 roster. John Hodge of 3DownNation.com, has compiled a list of potential free agents from the Stampeders roster.

Top of the list has to be Dedrick Mills. The Stampeders nominee for the George Reed Most Outstanding Player Award, led the league in rushing with 1,409 yards, his career best season by far and the only one where he played ever game. He will be 29 next season. The Stampeders ran the ball more than any other team and having Dedrick Mills in the backfield was a key factor in the Stampeders success. I would re-sign him just as fast as I can.

Pending Free Agents in the Receiving Core

The receiver conversation is the interesting one. With five set to become free agents, including four that were starters at points in the season, including Canadian Clark Barnes, Dominique Rhymes, Tevin Jones, and Erik Brooks. The other is one that just recently returned to practice in Malik Henry.

Malik Henry hasn’t played in a game in over two years after back to back season ending leg injuries and is set to become a free agent. He is a former 1000 yard receiver with the Stampeders and is looking to return to the football field next season, the question is whether that will be with the Stampeders or elsewhere.

Dominique Rhymes signed with the Stampeders to reunite with Vernon Adams Jr. to try and recreate the chemistry they had together with the BC Lions. For the season Rhymes was targeted 94 time with 50 catches for 886 yards. Did say in a media availability after the season that his passion for football was reignited by playing in Calgary.

    Decisions on the Defensive Line

The amount of studs on the defensive line potentially heading to free agency from the Stampeders is frighting. The list include Clarence Hicks, Jaylon Hutchings and Lorenzo Mauldin IV, who joined the team late in the season in a trade with the Ottawa REDBLACKS. With Folarin Orimolade returning next season a decision needs to be made on who to keep.

Arguably Clarence Hicks and Jaylon Hutchings should be the main focus. Not to discredit Mauldin who I’m sure will find a place on any starting role in the CFL, but Hicks will be entering his third season, and Hutchings broke out big in the first half of the season that teams started to game-plan against him, opening up Hicks to make a massive impact this season. Keeping them together on that side would be a best case scenario for the Stampeders.

Hosting the Grey Cup Could Factor into Signings

With the Stampeders set to host the 113th Grey Cup in 2026, and a team that is starting to come back to life after a dismal 2024 season, the prospect of playing in that game in front of a home crowd would be appealing to many. The last time a team that was hosting the Grey Cup and participated in the game was in 2013 with the Saskatchewan Roughriders, who also won that game 45-23.

As usual the insanity of the CFL offseason is almost upon us all, but for now the focus is still on the CFL playoffs as the East and West Finals take place this weekend in Hamilton and Regina respectively.

  • First of all, what a first week of the Grey Cup Playoffs. Both games coming down to the last three minutes, one with a terrific comeback attempt, the other in a last second field goal to walk it off. It could not have gone any better for the Canadian Football League, simply sensational.

Now for the fun stuff. After the Montreal Alouettes held off the amazing comeback attempt by the Winnipeg Blue Bombers by a final score of 42 to 33, are in position now to walk into Hamilton with Davis Alexander and head to the Grey Cup.

    The Match-up

    Montreal Alouettes at Hamilton Tiger-Cats
Saturday November 8, at Hamilton Stadium

As mentioned before, the Alouettes walked out of the East Semi-Final with the W, and setting up a classic new vs experienced match-up with future Canadian Football Hall of Fame member, Bo Levi Mitchell on one side, and budding star Davis Alexander on the other. Davis Alexander is still undefeated as a starter, both in the regular season and now in the playoffs as well. The Alouettes away from home hold a 6-3 record, however they did lose both their games against the Tiger-Cats.

The Tiger-Cats are led by the aforementioned Bo Levi Mitchell, who is the East Division nominee for the George Reed Most Outstanding Player Award for the second season in a row. They finished the season a top the East with an 11-7 record.

At home they went 6-3, and even more impressively dominated the East with a 7-1 record. Their only loss against the East came on Labour Day in a 35-33 loss to the Toronto Argonauts. Against the Alouettes they won both games by a combined score of 61-26. However, just like with the Blue Bombers, they did not face Davis Alexander, who is quickly becoming an All-Star level quarterback in this league. If healthy all season could easily have been a nominee for MOP.

    Deciding Factors

The deciding factors are numerous. For the Tiger-Cats their game-plan against Davis Alexander needs to be sound, even under pressure he has the ability to extend plays and move the ball efficiently to his numerous targets, including Canadian star Tyson Philpot, and Austin Mack. The healthy of the Montreal running backs is in question with Travis Theis missing the Semi-Final. For the Ti-Cats to win they have to disrupt the passing game and force the Al’s to win on the ground.

For the Alouettes, their defense also has to be the focal point against a veteran QB who has done it all in the CFL. The Al’s will need to show a ton of different looks and disguise coverage’s and blitzes to make a difference against Mitchell. Even that may not be enough, Mitchell has seen everything a defense could throw at him and continues to find a way to win.

    The Prediction

    Montreal – 38
    Hamilton – 40

This is going to be an all out shoot-out to me, which means that this is going to be a defensive battle and my prediction is going to fall incredibly short of expectations. I hope not because the first two games of the playoffs have been incredible.

The winner of this game will represent the East Division at the 112th Grey Cup in Winnipeg on November 16th.

  • The West Semi-Final will take place right after the East Semi-Final on Saturday, November 1 at 3:30pm MT.
The Stampeders are back in the post season after finishing last in the league last season. A remarkable turn around in one year to return to the post season after reworking the defense and the fact that both the offensive and defensive coordinators were replaced as well. Even if the Stampeders lose, this season has to feel like a win.

    The Match-up

    Calgary Stampeders at BC Lions

It took until the last game of the season to decide who went where, and with the Lions win over the Riders, it meant the Stampeders would visit Vancouver and head into hostile territory in BC Place.

The Stampeders finished the season 11-7, while going a division best 7-3 within the West. They are one of the better teams on the road this season with a 5-4 record away from McMahon Stadium. In the season series the Lions and Stampeders face each other twice, with the Lions taking both games by a combined score of 90-47.

The British Columbia Lions also finished 11-7, however with the series sweep meant that the Lions would win the tiebreaker and would host the West Semi’s if there was a tie. Against the West they finished with a 6-4 record, and at BC Place Stadium they tied for the league lead for a 6-3 home record.

    Deciding Factors

The Stampeders will only go as far as Vernon Adams Jr and Dedrick Mills will take them. The unquestioned leaders of the Stampeders offense will have to work in tandem against the Lions defensive line led by Most Outstanding Defensive Player finalist, Mathieu Betts. For the Stampeders to win, they must keep Adams as clean as possible while getting the lead early and suffocating the Lions lethal offense.

Using Dedrick Mills is a requirement for the Stampeders to win. In the past, when the Stampeders have had a MOP quality running back they have gone away from them early in the playoffs. This must be avoided at all costs for them.
The Stampeders are a perfect 9-0 when leading at the half, and just 2-7 when trailing.

The BC Lions have arguably the most dangerous offense in the entire CFL, with the capabilities of Nathan Rourke to not only throw deep down field, but to escape the pocket and throw on the run, or just run it 50 yards on his own. It creates a headache for any defensive coordinator trying to make a game-plan against him.

    The Prediction

    Calgary – 26
    BC – 32

The 112th Grey Cup in Winnipeg is on November 16th at Princess Auto Stadium.

  • The East Semi-Final is this Saturday, November 1 at 12pm MT, and will feature a crossover for the first time since 2019. This time it’s the Winnipeg Blue Bombers taking the almost three hour flight into Montreal to face the Alouettes.

    The Match-up

Winnipeg Blue Bombers at Montreal Alouettes

This will be the second week in a row that the Bombers and Alouettes will play each other, this time the stakes are much higher in a win or go home scenario for the right to play the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the East Final.

Winnipeg went 10-8 overall, and 6-2 against East Division opponents this season, however just a 3-6 record away from Princess Auto Stadium. But against the Alouettes this season, they managed to sweep the two games played, including a 26-13 win at Percival-Molson Stadium in week 12. However, they didn’t play against starting QB Davis Alexander in either game.

Montreal also went 10-8 overall despite missing star QB Davis Alexander for most of the season and fully expect the standout pivot to lead the Alouettes into the playoffs. They were just 4-6 against West Division teams including the two losses to Winnipeg, and were 4-5 at home.

    The Deciding Factors

It’s hard not to put Montreal QB Davis Alexander as a deciding factor in the game, having yet to lose a CFL start in his young career. In just 7 starts this season the health concerns are real, even with not taking the field against these same Blue Bombers in the final game of the season. During his starts he went 158 for 218, tallying up 2,024 yards with 10 touchdowns and 3 interceptions.

Brady Oliveira ran for over a thousand yards once again for the Blue Bombers, picking up just 3 majors. The identity of the Blue Bombers since the emergence of Andrew Harris many years ago, and continuing with Oliveira, has been run the ball. For the Bombers to win this game and be one of the very few to win a crossover game, the run game will be important.

Just as important will be the Alouettes defensive front 7, including their leader in defensive plays made Darnell Sankey. He is a force to be reckoned with and will be counted on to stop the run game of the Bombers. His 103 tackles on the season puts him third in the CFL, just behind Tony Jones of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

    Prediction:

    Winnipeg – 31
    Montreal – 33

The CFL playoffs provide some of the greatest moments in Canadian sports, and these playoff games should be incredible to watch. The road to the Grey Cup is about to begin, and I can’t wait anymore. This is our league, and this is our game.

  • In the final game of the season a controversial whistle took away a touchdown for the Roughriders, and unfortunately it was the deciding factor in the game. There was a BC Lions fumble close to the goal line, it was recovered at the 3 yard line and returned for a touchdown.

It went to the replay centre and was determined that there was in fact, a fumble. However, there had been a whistle and the play was dead at the 3. The final score of the game was 27-21 BC over Saskatchewan.

The error has led to a number of things, most notably home field advantage in the West Semi-Final for the BC Lions. As well as other playoff implications.

    East Semi-Final Matchup
    Saturday November 1 @ 12pm MT

    Winnipeg Blue-Bombers @ Montreal Alouettes

The result of the BC-Saskatchewan game means that the Winnipeg Blue-Bombers will travel to Montreal in the crossover position. No team has ever made it to the Grey Cup game via the crossover.

The Alouettes have one of the best starting quarterbacks in the CFL in Davis Alexander, who broke a CFL record for most consecutive wins to begin a career and is still undefeated as a starter. The winner will face the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in Hamilton to decide who will play for the 112th Grey Cup.

    West Semi-Final Matchup
    Saturday November 1 @ 3:30pm MT

Calgary Stampeders @ British Columbia Lions

The bid for a home playoff game for the Stampeders ended with the Lions win over the Roughriders. The Stampeders are back in the playoffs after missing last season. Before that they made the playoffs a CFL record 18 years in a row.

The BC Lions are one of, if not, the hottest team in the CFL. The also have the face of the league at quarterback in Canadian Nathan Rourke. If the Stampeders hope to win, they must contain Rourke, and stop Matthieu Betts from getting to Adams JR. The winner will face the Saskatchewan Roughriders in Regina November 8th for the right to play for the 112th Grey Cup.

It was one of the most dramatic finishes to a CFL season in recent memory, and the playoffs should be just incredible to watch. I’m looking forward to it, and I hope you are too. Because the road to the 112th Grey Cup in Winnipeg, starts right now.

  • This week the Canadian Football League announced the team award winners. Earlier in the year I made my own predictions into who would be the Stampeders award winners. Today let’s go over them and see how well I did. I named my midseason award winners on the Running Wild Podcast.

    The CFL Awards are:
    Most Outstanding Player (MOP)
    Most Outstanding Canadian (MOC)
    Most Outstanding Defensive Player (MOD)
    Most Outstanding Rookie (MOR)
    Most Outstanding Offensive Lineman (MOL)
Most Outstanding Special Teams Player (MOS)

I will start with Special Teams and work my way to MOP.

MOS – My Prediction Godfrey Onyeka
    Winner- Mark Vassett

At the time of recording my midseason awards, my choices were either Vassett, or Onyeka. Due to the less than ideal start by future hall of famer Rene Paredes. At the time Onyeka was the leader in special teams tackles, but Vassett proved to be very worthy of being the Stampeders MOS nominee, leading the league in net punt average with 42.1, which would break the single season record of 41.5.

    MOL -My Prediction D’Antne Demery
    Winner- Zack Williams

D’Antne Demery has sat out a few games, and that’s sometimes the determining factor in naming a MOL nominee. Usually the nominee has played every game, and at the same position, and hasn’t been the subject of too many highlights. Zack Williams fits the bill and is fully deserving of the nomination.

MOR – My prediction Chris Fortin
    Winner- Chris Fortin

When Bryce Bell went down early in the season, Chris Fortin picked up the ball and has not looked out of place in his first pro season. The 8th overall selection by the Stampeders out of the UCONN Huskies program could be a 15 year Stampeder at the centre position, and with only one bad snap is deserving to be the West Division nominee for MOR.

MOD – My prediction Jacob Roberts
    Winner- Clarence Hicks

What a second half to the season by Clarence Hicks. 11 sacks to lead the team and second in the league. At the time of the recording, Jacob Roberts was as dynamic a defensive player the Stampeders had on the defensive side of the ball. But Hicks has just taken over the defensive line.

MOC – My prediction Adrian Greene* got injured, if he didn’t get hurt likely would’ve been MOC (My opinion)
    Winner- Jalen Philpot

Adrian Greene is one of the best ball hawks on the Stampeders, and I’m fully convinced if he had a full season would’ve been the nominee. But Jalen Philpot, when healthy, is a game changer. Keyword is healthy. The injury bug has plagued him his entire career so far. This season he has racked up a career high 830 yards and 3 touchdowns. It will end with that total as Philpot is ruled out for the last game of the season.

MOP – My prediction Dedrick Mills
    Winner- Dedrick Mills

Kind of hard to argue with the league leader in rushing yards. Well over 1000 yards rushing heading into the last game against the Elks, and obvious choice as this teams MOP.

Looking over things at the end of the season, 2/6 with the nature of football, and making midseason predictions, I’ll take it.

The CFL playoffs start Nov. 1 with the 112th Grey Cup in Winnipeg less than a month away.

  • This is the last update before the playoffs begin on November 1st. The field is set, we know who’s in and who’s out. The Saskatchewan Roughriders, BC Lions, Calgary Stampeders and Winnipeg Blue Bombers from the West Division. The Hamilton Tiger-Cats and the Montreal Alouettes from the East. The Crossover is in effect, but as for who it will be is anyone’s guess. The only known fact is that the Stampeders cannot crossover.

    Week 21 Schedule

The final week of the CFL season starts in Hamilton on Friday where the Ottawa REDBLACKS visit to end the year. The REDBLACKS have been eliminated for a few weeks and the Tiger-Cats are still playing for who will host the East Final.

Also on Friday, it’s the Battle of Alberta for the third time as the Elks host the Stampeders. The Elks were eliminated this past weekend and the Stampeders still hold out hope for a home playoff game.

First game on Saturday is the Winnipeg Blue Bombers hosting the Montreal Alouettes in the game of the week, with both teams playing for something, maybe. The Alouettes could be playing for the right to host the East Final if the Ti-Cats lose on Friday. More of that later.

Closing out the CFL regular season will be the BC Lions and the Saskatchewan Roughriders. The Riders have nothing to play for and looking for a tune up before they host the West Final on November 8th.

    The Scenario’s

This will be a much more in depth version than what I’ve done before. The West can end with a three way tie for second. BC holds the tiebreaker over the Stampeders, the Stampeders hold the tiebreaker over the Bombers, and the Bombers hold the tiebreaker over the Lions. This could be one of the craziest endings to a season in recent CFL history.

    WEST DIVISION

    Saskatchewan Roughriders

    Clinched first place

    BC Lions

Can secure second place and host with
    A win OR
    A Bombers and Stampeders loss

    Will finish third with
    A loss AND
A Stampeders win or tie AND Bombers loss

    Will Crossover with
A loss AND Stampeders win AND Bombers win

Could Crossover with tiebreaker procedures after all games have been played IF
All three teams are tied in standings.

    Calgary Stampeders

Can secure second and host with

    A win/tie AND
    A Lions loss

Will finish third and travel within the West with

    A win or loss AND
    A Lions win

Cannot crossover due to tiebreaker rules.

    Winnipeg Blue Bombers

    Will finish third with
    A Win AND
A Lions loss AND Stampeders win

    Will crossover with

    A loss or
    A Lions win

Could finish second or third or crossover IF

All three teams are tied and with results of the tiebreaker procedure after games are played.

    East Division

Much easier to work out in the east, very simple.

    Hamilton Tiger-Cats

Will clinch first in the East and host the East Final with

    A win OR
    A Montreal loss

    Montreal Alouettes

Will clinch first in the East and host East Final with

    A win AND
    A Hamilton loss

  • CFL Playoff Picture: Who Will Make the Final Cut?

The playoff picture is both coming along nicely and coming along insanely. A few weeks ago the story was the Edmonton Elks would miss, guaranteed. Now the race is on for the Elks. They must win their remaining games and either the Calgary Stampeders or Winnipeg Blue Bombers must lose their remaining games.

    Week 20 Games

There are a full slate of games this week starting with the West Division leaders Saskatchewan Roughriders heading into Winnipeg on Friday to kick off the weekend. The Riders will be resting their starters as they have locked up hosting the West Final.

Next on Friday, it’s the Friday Night Football on TSN game with the Edmonton Elks heading to the west coast to face the BC Lions. The Elks are in must win territory and facing one of the hottest teams in the CFL.

For Saturday’s doubleheader it starts in Ottawa with the Alouettes de Montreal visiting and looking for the win to keep the pressure on for first place in the East. The REDBLACKS have been eliminated already and like the Argos will be playing for pride and contracts.

The last game of the week features the Toronto Argonauts heading west to the Stampede City and facing the Calgary Stampeders. The Stampeders are struggling. They have lost four straight games before last weeks win.

    The Scenarios Around the League

    Saskatchewan Roughriders

The Roughriders are playing tune up games after clinching the West Division.

    BC Lions

The BC Lions can clinch second in the west and host a playoff game with:
A WIN over Edmonton AND losses by Calgary AND Winnipeg

    Calgary Stampeders

The Calgary Stampeders can clinch a playoff berth with:
    A WIN over Toronto OR
    A LOSS by Edmonton

    Winnipeg Blue Bombers

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers can clinch a playoff berth with:
    A WIN over Edmonton

    Edmonton Elks

The Edmonton Elks will be eliminated from playoff contention with:
    A LOSS against Winnipeg

    Hamilton Tiger-Cats

Hamilton is on the bye-week but can clinch the East and host the East Final with:
    A Montreal LOSS against Ottawa

    Montreal Alouettes

Montreal will settle for second in the East and host the Crossover with
    A LOSS

    Ottawa REDBLACKS AND Toronto Argonauts

Both teams have been eliminated from the CFL playoffs

The road to the Grey Cup begins November 1.
